Going, going … gone!  The shifting zone between urban and rural has introduced new categories of potential subject matter for the landscape painter such as landfill sites, old quarries, sewage plants, canals, bridges, masts, ruins, rewilding rubbish tips, mines, power lines, retail parks and  business parks.  Such ‘edgelands’ as a topic in art embraces not only land set to one side such as wasteland, but also Sites of Special Scientific Interest, traditional commons and any overlooked patch of ground.  I am fascinated but all these places. It is a landscape shaped by human hand for millennia now changing dramatically from continued industrialisation and progress.
